My EVS challenge or new adventure

Hello, my name is Magda and I come from Poland. Last year I finished history at Warsaw University. I arrived in Belgium 1st October and I stay here till 15th February. I work at school for blind and visually impaired children in Liège as a volunteer.

If you would ask me if I had fears I would say yes. New people and unknown places, language I knew just a little bit. There were many question marks why I decided to go here. I like new challenges, so I treat my stay here as a big challenge and a possibility to get new experiences.

During the first week of my work I had no doubts that I made a good choice. The children and youth accepted me very quickly and I'm in very good relationships with them.

What my work insist in? I helped children who learn Braille, using computer and special software. I love singing, so we sing together. I discuss with youth about problems connected with their disability and talk with them about my experiences.

Teachers, who I work with, are very opened and helpful. When I proposed a few ideas for activities they accepted them. A few times I brought adapted games and my little friends liked them very much. They are still asking me for them, so I promised to bring something else. My proposition to talk about polish Christmas tradition was immediately accepted by the class. Youth will have a possibility to taste polish kitchen. We will cook tomato soup. Next month I would like to organize a visit in historical museum.

I spend my free time with friends from different countries. Our meetings give me a great opportunity to know many things about their culture and tradition. I visited a few places in Belgium but there is still something what I want to see.

One time per week I have a French course but I learn this language everywhere. on the street, during the shopping, talking with friends and at work. I have to say that children are great teachers. If there is word which I don't understand, they explain me very clearly. For example, they give me something to touch or describe it.

Time goes very quickly. Next month I have to return to Poland but I'm sure that I will come back here.
